Optical properties of surfaces can be controlled by fabricating nanoscale microstructures with period shorter than the light wavelength onto the surface It is a kind of artificial medium, which enables us to make optical properties which were difficult to achieve with natural material. For example, it is possible to control the refractive index and optical anisotropy with desired spatial arrangement and to realize an extremely strong or weak wavelength dispersion.

Nanostructure photonics is a new field of research for clarifying the behavior of light waves in these types of nanostructures and developing new optical elements that make use of these optical properties.

In this project new nanostructure optical elements are designed and produced experimentally. In addition, nano-processing and measurement technologies are investigated to support the mass production of there elements. with the goal of fabricating optical elements for use in information devices, communications, and other fields.
